Jess & Kevin - Carlowrie Castle, Edinburgh

Jess & Kevin live in Toronto, Canada - but flew all the way over to Edinburgh, Scotland to say their vows in one of my all time favourite venues, Carlowrie Castle.

I can honestly say, I’ve never been to a wedding like it in my whole life. Not only was every single detail absolutely exquisite, but this couple are just so friggin’ LIKEABLE, and unquestionably in love. I’ll remember this one forever.

Why tho?

It’s May, the sun is shining - and I thought I’d hop onto my blog today because… I’ve got a secret.

Now, if you’d like to know what this secret is - you’re going to need to tolerate my elaborate story-telling for just a sec, okay?

This week I’ve absolutely powered through the book ‘Start With Why’ by Simon Sinek (I’m not sure what came over me - I’m not the type of person that nestles down with a book and a blanket. I’m more the person that goes to get ice cream, ya know?)

This book, whilst delving into all the grown up stuff like case studies, marketing techniques and even biology - poses one simple question throughout :

4 things I learned in 2018.

It’s the middle of January - and I’ve been putting off writing this post.

When I jotted down the title ‘4 things I learned in 2018’ - I’d assumed it’d be easy to sum up 365 days into a short, snappy article.

I’ve discovered, though, that I’m literally incapable of writing a short, snappy pointless blog post. What’s the point? You don’t want to read it, and I don’t want to write it.

So, here’s my ACTUAL lessons from 2018 - my most ‘successful’ year to date. LOL. Enjoy.

As I flicked through instagram this morning I received an unwelcome reminder that, almost a year ago, I'd made a commitment - an all-in 'I'm going to blog every week' kind of commitment to putting myself (& my thoughts) out there more.

Not only that, but I was reminded how, as with most other commitments I'd made in a flurry of 'I'm so motivated right now', I'd bailed.

You see, this 'putting yourself out there' thing - it's super uncomfortable & all kinds of vulnerable. Given enough thought, it's amazing how adept you can be at finding a million and one excuses as to why you have nothing of any value to contribute anyway.

And do you know what? Sometimes you genuinely don't.

I'm a little late to the table here - but I felt like it was maybe time that I, too, acknowledged the beginning of a Happy New Year.

So, is it just me, or was anyone else ready for 2017 to just go ahead and be over?

For all the breathtaking highs of last year - those highs were often met with some pretty low lows; some of the most noteable being that I am now 26, I continue to age daily, & Donald Trump is somehow the president.

Get your own ass home.

Have you ever had one of those days that just DID NOT go the way you wanted it to?

One week ago I found myself sat in Edinburgh airport at 6.30am - 400 miles from home. Overnight there had been enough snowfall in England to send the country into a frenzy. When you live in the UK - the weatherman tells you there will be snow - and of course, you don't believe him. Like every other year - we were still completely and utterly unprepared when it came.

Nevertheless - I'd been counting day the days until I could see some of the white stuff falling from the sky and it just so happened that this particular weekend I was away shooting a wedding in Scotland. It was okay though, because according to my perfect plan - it was all going to go off without a hitch, and I was going to make it home in time to roll around in the snow.

Nothing to Prove

If you've been following my blog at all, you'll know that this year - I decided to stop wasting my time on insecurity.

Sounds nice, right?

For those of you that are just joining my journey now, a short summary :- at the beginning of 2017, I had had enough. I was done. I hated that I was trying so hard to prove myself to people that don't matter. It was exhausting & stupid.

So, I stopped.

A guide to the Cinque Terre

Hi. My name is Jess & I have impossibly high standards.

Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamt of travelling to Italy.

In my imagination there were fields upon fields of sunflowers as far as the eye could see, Roger Moore was in a Gondola, there was an old Italian guy spinning pizzas on both arms and two dogs falling in love over meatballs on the pavement.

How to style a cosy, minimalist home.

I like to party.

By 'party', I mean... I like to stay home and watch Netflix.

Throw in a blanket, some chocolate Hobnobs and the comfiest joggers (not for jogging btw) - and you've just about reached divinity.

Winter is coming, the nights are closing in - and 99% of my life until March is going to revolve around my cosy little home. So... naturally, it was only right to invite you over.

Let's talk about being uncomfortable for a second, shall we?

Imagine this.

Wearing a pair of faux leather flares, studded heels, and a big, fluffy-as-hell, pink coat.

Now... go ahead and place me in the car park of Waitrose - in my local town of Hereford. Populated by only 55,000 people. The county of Herefordshire is literally dubbed the most rural and sparsely populated in England, and for the most part - these people come from farming families.

In this town - cows are all the rage. Beef is a form of currency, and fresh fruit & veg is available from the local farmer's market. It's rare that you would walk down the highstreet without seeing somebody that you know.

"But how do these country folk feel about big, fat, unforgiving leather pants?", I hear you ask.

Some free, (& kind of impartial), advice.

Wondering if you should bother having an engagement session with your photographer? More to the point, is there even enough time before the big day to meet any of your wedding suppliers?

With everything that's going on in the lead up to a wedding, it can be pretty overwhelming. Gurl, I get it.

BUT, there's nothing like your own wedding to teach you about the experience of being a bride. I consider myself somewhat of a professional bride these days. 😉

Would you like some free advice?

Okay then.

In London with Grace Loves Lace

We were so amped when leading Australian bridal designers Grace Loves Lace emailed us to say they had launched their London Showroom and wanted us to capture some of their swoon-worthy gowns - London-style. How could we refuse?

It's always a struggle not to absolutely BEAST social media with every single photo from a campaign this delicious - but being the extremely disciplined person I am... (said whilst sipping on a big fat strawberry milkshake) - I managed to refrain.

In Between

It's been a whole year since I last blogged and I realise, suddenly, that I'm one of those people that's old enough to be saying things like, 'Where does the time go?'.

But really - where does it go?

ANDREW & LUCY - Carlowrie Castle, Edinburgh

Today we're grateful for those babes over at Studio 1208 for letting us in on a very good thing when they referred us to Andrew & Lucy.

Andrew, an ex-professional footballer, and Lucy, an all Scottish babe who is a Wedding Planner by trade, married in the most fairytale of Scottish Castles - Carlowrie Castle. But don't be deceived by it's traditional exterior - inside, lies an eccentric, modern refurbishment - with rad art in every corner.
